Groundation - Weak Heart

"Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me!"

Is there even a shred of truth in this rhyme? I understand that it is supposed to teach children to take the high road or to not take it to heart when taunted by a bully. But what is this rhyme teaching the bullies?* And what kind of lesson are we teaching the youth regarding the value of their spoken words?

Perhaps our society would be a better place if people understood that the words they speak do indeed have a powerful impact on the lives of others: that as a speaker they control the power to do much good or much evil with their very words.

So instead of the old "Sticks and Stones" saying,
what if we taught our youth a different message?

What message would you teach?

*Not to mention the apparent increase in the amount of attention this society is giving bullying. It leads one to wonder what the correlation is between our culture's general social mentality and the growing severity and numbers of "bullies."

The Steppas - Niceness

Aloha! There seems to be a stir in the political winds today. Above all else, remember the golden rule you were taught when you were a youth: Treat others like how you would want to be treated. Spread niceness my friends, spread aloha.

Rebelution - Courage To Grow

LYRICS:

This is a song for those
Who lost their hope
A long a long time ago
I know someday that you will find it somehow
Because you're not too old
To accomplish goals
And all the answers are within your soul
It's up to you, you gotta figure it out
Uh huh

Whether you want love or money
Good fortune or fame
You want a brand new car
You want the world to change
You better take some action right now, oh yes
Because there's nothing in the world that you can't get
So don't fill your life with confusion and regret
You better take some chances right now

Well you can gain the world
But for the price of your soul
Yes I know, well I know, yes I know
You can gain the world for the price of your soul
But I hope you take the road less traveled
And I hope you find the courage to grow
Well I hope you find the courage to grow

So now you're 45
And you realize
Just what you wanna do with your life
Just took some time for you to figure it out
Cause everyone one of us
Has a purpose here
Sometimes it's hidden underneath your fear
Just takes some time for the truth to come out

So whether you want love or money
Good fortune or fame
You want a brand new car
You want the world to change
You better take some action right now, oh yes
Because there's nothing in the world that you can't get
So don't fill your life with confusion and regret
You better take some chances right now

Well you can gain the world
But for the price of your soul
Yes I know, well I know, yes I know
You can gain the world for the price of your soul
But I hope you take the road less traveled
And I hope you find the courage to grow
Well I hope you find the courage to grow

Mike Love - Permanent Holiday

Here's an awesome live performance of Mike Love accompanied by Mike Love on guitar with backing vocals by Mike Love - made possible via loop pedals. He is one of O'ahu's resident roots musicians and is a definite must-see when in Honolulu. Love performs regularly, alone or along side Sam Ites at O'tooles, and also along with Paula Fuga and band Dubkonscious. Check out the HawaiiReggaeGuild for dates and times.

"And so I on a permanent holiday,
I'm going outside to play
I ain't gonna slave away.
For no corporate Babylon
I'm never gonna be a pawn
in their manipulation games~"
