MIT OpenCourseWare | Free Online Course Materials

http://civilexer.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/mitopencourseware1.jpg%3Fw%3D590Did you know that the prestigious MIT has a website dedicated to open courses free to the public?

From aeronautics to cognitive science to anthropology, your options are far from few. Complete with syllabi, readings, assignments, and projects, each course has everything you need to round out your online learning experience.

Since MIT's official open courseware site launch back in 2003, the number of visitors and available classes has met and surpassed the expected success of the program. But if MIT is not your style, feel free to check out these other highly regarded open university programs.

In this modern era, ignorance is no longer an excuse, it is a decision.

6 Women Scientists Who Were Snubbed Due to Sexism

Just in case you didn't already know, politics and science has snubbed way more women than just these 6. Don't let prejudice prevent progress; inequality is holding our species back from achieving greater things.

Revolution by Coolie L

Aloha mai kākou!

Recently, I have been attempting to crank out some new art with aims of submitting my subject matter in specific art and design contests (usually T-shirt designs). All this at the encouragement of a artist friend of mine. So here is my latest attempt to capture a special message of my own in a display of artistic experimentation. The theme is that of a punk nature, and here is my best attempt to express those sentiments in a series of nonrandom lines scribbled by my #2 pencil. Enjoy!

P.S. Here is a link to an alternate vision of my creation.

30 Abandoned Places That Look Truly Beautiful

More specifically, an eerie tone of beauty which lies in the mystery of human desolation. Because we are mortal beings, we are an amnesic species from generation to generation; and our past is nearly as mysterious as our future. What we can remember, marks the capacity of human knowledge. What we have yet to learn, marks the capacity of human potential.

Incredible. Isn't it?

15 Surreal Satellite Images of Earth

The impact and devastation that human beings are capable of incising upon the Earth is astounding. Here are some incredible satellite images of specific events caused by human activity that have left lasting scars on the planet. In terms of a macroscopic analogy, it appears that the Earth is suffering from a virus or cancer of the human variety.

Below is a before-and-after comparison of the exponential growth of Las Vegas -- an artificial human playground in the middle of a non-sustainable desert.

Groundation - Weak Heart

"Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me!"

Is there even a shred of truth in this rhyme? I understand that it is supposed to teach children to take the high road or to not take it to heart when taunted by a bully. But what is this rhyme teaching the bullies?* And what kind of lesson are we teaching the youth regarding the value of their spoken words?

Perhaps our society would be a better place if people understood that the words they speak do indeed have a powerful impact on the lives of others: that as a speaker they control the power to do much good or much evil with their very words.

So instead of the old "Sticks and Stones" saying,
what if we taught our youth a different message?

What message would you teach?

*Not to mention the apparent increase in the amount of attention this society is giving bullying. It leads one to wonder what the correlation is between our culture's general social mentality and the growing severity and numbers of "bullies."

The Universal Language Is In Our Minds

"UC Berkeley linguistics lecturer Patrick Boudreault, who is deaf, explains that language is a fluid thing that's not just spoken. It's something universal that happens in our minds, whether it's communicated with our hands or our voice."

Have you ever stopped to really think about language?
How it magically enables us to communicate with each other?
How it mysteriously allows us to think
and define the incredible world which surrounds us?
How without it, our reality would not be our own?

In a culture of affluence, it is all too easy to take material things for granted. Which consequently makes it even easier still to walk through this life and overlook the most fundamental miracles of simply being.

Be grateful. And you will be happy, my friends.
Aloha~

9-Year Old Discusses the Meaning of Life and the Universe

It is amazing what a mind this young can grasp with such conviction. Continue to plant seeds among the youth! They are the ones that will have to answer to the problems we create today.

The Legend of Surfing: Kelly Slater | Living an Organic Life

This is one of the current issues my immediate home is facing at the moment. I am grateful for those who are convicted to speak up about certain topics that seem to be implemented in our society without any general consensus by public accord.  The only social malfeasance more contemptible than ignorance, is apathetic silence.

The Overview Effect

Perspective really does create a vehicle of radical enlightenment as it is quite the profound metaphor for ourselves as individuals as well as a collective species. Push yourself and your mind to think beyond your own immediate scope of knowledge and undertake the mental stretches required to strengthen your capacity for personal growth. The Overview Effect that these scientists discuss verges on the spiritual connectedness that ties together all life contained within our tiny blue orb of energy floating in space. Take care of one another, and together we can take care of the Earth. Brought to you in HD. Enjoy!

Sam Richards - A Radical Experiment In Empathy

Sam Richards delivers one of the most thought-provoking TEDtalks where he challenges the viewer to participate in a radical and emotional exercise in empathy.

Richards' leads us through this sociological experiment so that we could better understand the "other" people beyond our immediate political-social proximity. You may find his talk mentally exhausting as he unapologetically touches on sensitive political topics, but if you allow yourself to open your mind and step outside of your own preconceived socio-cultural constructs, I guarantee that you will experience something new. True empathy has the power to destroy and reconstruct the way you perceive yourself and the culture of which you are a part. Learn how to understand your fellow human.

Be Enlightened. Change your Heart. Change the World.
